The Best Use of Wealth in Islam: A True Story of Honesty and Generosity

Islamic history is filled with profound stories that teach us about honesty, the importance of keeping a trust (Amanah), and the best use of wealth in Islam. The following incident, narrated in Uyoon al-Hikayat, beautifully illustrates how Allah (SWT) creates ways out of hardship for those who are sincere and how true wealth is that which is spent in the way of Allah.
The Burden of an Orphan's Trust (Amanah)
It is narrated by Hazrat Sayyiduna Abu al-Husain Ahmad bin Husain al-Wa'iz that Hazrat Abu Abdullah bin Abu Musa al-Hashimi was entrusted with 10,000 dinars belonging to an orphan. Unfortunately, severe poverty struck him, and his situation worsened to the point of starvation. Compelled by extreme desperation, he used the entrusted money to survive.
When the orphan grew up, the Sultan ordered that his wealth be handed over. Hazrat Abu Musa al-Hashimi recalls his distress:
"When I received this order, I became deeply distressed. The earth, despite its vastness, felt entirely constricted to me. I could not understand where to go or how to repay the massive amount."
A Miraculous Meeting with Hazrat Salih bin Ahmad
In a state of immense worry, Abu Musa left his house early in the morning, mounted his mule, and rode aimlessly, hoping to find a way out. Without realizing it, his mule stopped right at the door of the mosque of Hazrat Sayyiduna Salih bin Ahmad.
He dismounted, entered the mosque, and offered his Fajr prayer behind Hazrat Salih. After the prayer, the pious scholar welcomed him warmly and invited him to his home.
A lavish breakfast of Hareesa was served, but Abu Musa could barely eat due to his anxiety. Seeing his condition, Hazrat Salih asked, "Why are you so worried?" After hearing the entire ordeal regarding the orphan's wealth, Hazrat Salih comforted him, saying:
"Eat your food without any worry; your need will be fulfilled."
The Generous Help and Repayment of Debt
After their meal, Hazrat Salih ordered his servant to open a specific room. Inside, there were numerous bags brimming with gold dinars. Exactly 10,000 dinars were weighed and handed over to Abu Musa.
Hazrat Salih simply said: "Take this money and pay off your debt."
Abu Musa respectfully declared it a loan and promised to return it. He then went directly to the king's court, proudly presented the 10,000 dinars, cleared his name of any embezzlement rumors, and safely handed the wealth to the rightful orphan.
Hard Work, Profit, and the Intention to Return the Loan
Feeling relieved, Abu Musa started a new chapter. He leased agricultural land from a nobleman and worked hard for three years. When he calculated his earnings at the end of the term, he had made a pure profit of 3,000 dinars.
Taking this money, he immediately set off to visit Hazrat Salih bin Ahmad to return the original 10,000-dinar loan and share his good news. However, upon hearing the story, Hazrat Salih smiled and gave a profound reply:
"Subhan Allah! By Allah! When I gave you the money, I did not give it with the intention of taking it back. Go and spend this money on your children."
The Secret Behind the Wealth: A Merchant’s Sadaqah Jariyah
Utterly amazed by such immense generosity, Abu Musa asked where this vast wealth had come from. Hazrat Salih revealed the beautiful secret:
"Because I had memorized the Holy Quran and noble Ahadith at a young age, I became well-known. A wealthy maritime merchant approached me and offered to fund a trading partnership. We split the profits equally for several years.
Eventually, the merchant came to me and said:
'I am mostly on sea voyages, and death is bound to come one day. You keep all this wealth, give charity from it, build mosques, and spend it on noble deeds.' Thus, this wealth came to me, and I spend it on righteous deeds."
Before parting ways, Hazrat Salih requested one final favor: "As long as I am alive, do not tell this story to anyone."
Moral of the Story
Honoring Trusts: Always strive to fulfill trusts (Amanah), and if you make a mistake, have the sincere intention to make it right.
Trusting Allah (Tawakkul): When all doors seem closed, Allah opens unexpected paths for those who seek His help.
The Best Use of Wealth: True success lies in using wealth to help those in need, building communities, and performing Sadaqah Jariyah (continuous charity).
Concealing Good Deeds: Sincere charity is best kept hidden to maintain pure intentions, just as Hazrat Salih kept his charitable acts a secret during his lifetime.
